Poems for My Daughter

Fatherhood · Family · Love

Everything changed the day my daughter arrived. These are a father’s poems — about holding her, protecting her, and learning what love really means by watching her grow. If you’re a dad, I wrote these for you too.

PROPHETIC LIGHT

Let me light your candle,
So you can shine my way,
Holding you in beseeching hands, watching beauty
flicker ostentatiously,
every worshiping day.

A prophetic visionary
Created you, I believe,
Just to be a beacon in my future.
As a princess,
A queen,
As you are, my royal majesty.

I shall be your vessel,
carrying you from sea to shining sea,
Sailing my love into your heart,
utterly.

Heading toward horizons, being free,
whispering 'bihabk atw'
(I love you) in Lebanese,
In your lighted presence is where I’d die ten times over,
Just to be.

BLOWING DANDELIONS

Until morning light,
The sun will shine upon your smile.
And if it shall shine so,
Then prayers will be answered,
Life's spirit lifting like dandelions,
As the wind blows.

Rising to heaven's end,
But never to see what love is
until life begins and goes.

In between such life,
I've loved and lived,
where you've been.

MAYBE

Maybe if you needed breaths,
I’d be the air you’d breathe.
And if you needed a prayer,
I’d sacrifice my life,
Bending knees.
Maybe,
if you never needed these things,
I just wanted you to know,
If I was ever nothing to you,
You were always everything to me.
